In a far off and desolate place, halfway between Rockford and oblivion lies the evil nightmare of some real estate developer. White, aluminum sided 9,500 square foot behemoths rise up around a man-made moat. The winds there are sustained at 24 miles per and the temperature is always at least 89 degrees. In all directions, no trees can take root. Not a single deer or squirrel has been spotted since the spring of 1997. Nearby farmers curse the stars, clutching the powdery remnants of yet another year’s failed crop.
This residential development just off Highway 20 should go by the correct name of "The White Dungeons of Lake Doom." However, truth in advertising was not on the mind of the person who named it "West Lake Village," where Jason M, Matt Smith and Andy battled bicycles on an 8 mile loop.
And in keeping with the theme from Week One of the Fall Fling, a list of factoids will have to suffice for the race:
1. 1199 right hand turns and 1 blistering left hand turn were made by 50 riders in the 1/2/3 field.
2. A rider crossed the center line in full on attack. The pack mumbled.
3. Said rider was immediately pulled over by the chase vehicle and DQ'd. The pack snickered.
4. A few laps later, a Clif Bar rider answering to the name of Andy thought his rear tire was flat.
5. The tire was in fact not flat.
6. Andy did not realize factoid number 5 until after stopping, undoing his skewer, and then finally giving the tire a squeeze.
7. Jason M. waited for Andy and pulled him back to the field just before the crosswinds.
8. Someone then attacked into the crosswinds, hard.
9. The field split up. Matt and Andy slobber-mouthed their way into the lead group.
10. A small breakaway made it stick in the closing lap.
11. Andy finished 12th in the 1/2's and Matt thumped most of his companions in a group behind the field for 15th in the 3's.
